Quote: Majoring in International Studies gave me a strong foundation for my career goal of furthering U.S.-Japan relations.  Thanks to the area focus, I was able to delve deeply into studying aspects of Japan ranging from business to language to culture to politics.  Taking advantage of the study abroad requirement as a sophomore on an academic-year program, I demonstrated a strong commitment to Japan.  This paved the way for me to return three more times to Japan on U.S. Department of State-sponsored programs.  The PTS Core allowed me to take courses from various disciplines, which broadened my skills base.

I am pursuing a career in U.S.-Japan relations because Japan is one of the United States’ most important allies.  Such alliances are formed over time through continuous and dedicated exchange of business, politics, culture, and people.  I believe the most effective way for me to promote U.S.-Japan relations is to work in the public sector, with either the U.S. government or the Government of Japan, to ensure that various types of exchange continue between all levels of society.  Through my work I contribute directly to the expansion of U.S.-Japan relations in the New England area by connecting Japanese and U.S. citizens who want to collaborate in mutually beneficial ways.

The LAS Global Studies Program faculty and staff are very knowledgeable individuals.  Do not be shy when it comes to asking them about new opportunities, introductions, career advice, etc.!  They are always willing to help!  I also recommend taking advantage of any new academic opportunity that comes your way, whether it is a chance to TA a class, join a research group, be part of an organization such as GSL or the Honor Society for International Studies, etc.  This is how you increase your knowledge, gain experience, and make great friends.  Finally, your Global Studies comrades are some of the most intelligent and engaged people you will meet – keep in touch, and you will have wonderful, inspiring friends for life!
